TAMEKA'S STORY
Tameka’s story is a powerful example of what can happen when people choose to show up, listen, pray, and walk alongside one another. What began through a simple JLK connection grew into relationship, encouragement, and a deeper sense of belonging — a reminder that the love of Jesus is often experienced most clearly through people who genuinely care.

“You Are Not Alone”
During an evening of outreach at LaCrone Park, a JLK volunteer noticed a teenage girl walking alone and felt strongly that God wanted her to know she wasn’t alone. Her name was Natasha, and she had just had a major argument with her mom and was considering running away from home.
The volunteer sat with her, listened, prayed with her, and talked with her about her dreams and her future. They shared a meal and continued talking throughout the evening. By the time Natasha left, she was smiling and had decided not to run away. Instead, she said she was going home to hug her mom and trust God to bring the right people into her life.

“Cancer-Free”
A woman who had been battling leukemia for six months came to a JLK Prayer & Grill Night and asked for prayer for healing. Members of the team prayed with her and believed God with her.
A few weeks later, she received a report that showed no signs of cancer. The testimony was shared with JLK as an answer to prayer and a reason to give glory to Jesus.

“I Had Been Praying for Her”
A JLK volunteer received a small list of people and prayer requests and continued praying for them long after the original outreach had ended. At one point, the volunteer even tried visiting one of the homes but no one answered. Much later, while serving through street ministry, the team unexpectedly ended up in that same neighborhood — and at that same house. As they spoke with the family, the volunteer recognized the woman’s name and realized she was one of the people they had been praying for all along.
The woman’s daughter explained that those prayers had helped sustain her mother through an incredibly difficult season. What began as a name on a prayer list became a real relationship and an opportunity for continued encouragement.

“God Heard the Prayers”
A woman connected with JLK during a particularly difficult season when she had been crying throughout the day and felt deeply discouraged. She later told a follow-up volunteer how much it meant when the people in the red JLK shirts stopped, cared for her, and prayed with her.
One of her major prayer requests was for housing. During a later follow-up conversation, she shared that a home had become available and she was preparing to move in. She became emotional as she talked about God answering prayer — and then prayed for Jesus Loves Kzoo, asking God to help JLK reach even more people.

“Faith Into Action”
During a JLK outreach at Colonial Acres, volunteers from The Bridge and Fresh Start Church noticed that the community had a significant problem with potholes. Rather than simply noticing the need, the two churches came back together with a team of about 15 people and repaired many of the potholes throughout the community. Residents stopped to thank them, and the property management was thrilled.
It became a simple but powerful picture of churches working together to love their neighbors through practical action.
